Akropole Shopping and Entertainment Centre has received 1st place in the nomination “New public building” in 2019

An official ceremony to mark the prestigious competition “Latvian Construction Annual Awards 2019” took place on 10 March, highlighting and recognising achievements in architecture and construction over the course of the past year. The competition is being held for the sixth time, buildings are being judged in 10 nomination categories, and on this occasion the jury chose Akropole Shopping and Entertainment Centre as the winner in the nomination “New public building”.  

“The efforts we have made have been recognised and we are truly honoured that the jury has chosen Akropole as the winner in the nomination category “The best public building” of last year,” said Akropole Shopping and Entertainment Centre CEO Zane Kaktiņa. “We’re proud that thanks to our careful planning and skilful selection of materials, technologies and systems, Akropole has received this prestigious award.”

Akropole is one of the biggest building projects in Latvia in recent years. The shopping and entertainment centre spans an area of 98,000 square metres, while the total area of the territory covers almost 16 hectares. Total investments in the implementation of the project, including transport infrastructure construction and improvements to the surrounding area, have reached almost EUR 180 million. The client for the object is SIA M257, construction work was carried out by SIA Merks, the author’s supervision was done by Sarma & Norde Arhitekti, while construction supervision was performed by Būvuzraugi.lv.

Akropole is also the first shopping centre in Latvia to obtain a BREEAM certificate at the building design stage, and the project has been implemented in conformity with the highest energy efficiency and sustainability standards, thus ensuring environmentally and people friendlier solutions. Moreover, the Akropole Business Centre has just received a BREEAM certificate at the construction stage.”

Latvia’s biggest annual building competition “Latvian Construction Annual Awards 2019” received a total of 162 nominations. The competition jury was comprised of 15 construction industry experts, who judged works in 10 nomination categories – public outdoor premises, façade renovation, new residential building, wooden building, restoration, new public building, renovation, new engineering building and industrial building. Akropole was recognised as the best building on 2019 in the nomination category “New public building”.

The mission of the “Latvian Construction Annual Awards” is to promote safe, innovative, high quality and aesthetically quality buildings and structures, which were designed in the Republic of Latvia or abroad, provided that the builders, designers and structural manufacturers, etc. responsible for the implementation of the project are Latvian citizens. The competition is organised with the goal of increasing the prestige of the construction, design and architecture sectors within society, promoting the experience of best practice both in Latvia and overseas.

Akropole Shopping and Entertainment Centre is the newest and most modern shopping centre in Latvia. Akropole is also home to the largest B+ class Business Centre in Latvia, which is connected to the shopping centre. Here, visitors will find the only Van Graaf multi-brand store in the Baltics, a Deichmann footwear store, as well as the region’s only USC and adidas Originals sporting and lifestyle goods stores. In addition, the shopping centre also contains the biggest Zara, Reserved, Oysho, Guess and KidzOne brand stores in Latvia, as well as the only River Island brand store to also offer a collection for men. This extensive range of shops is augmented by restaurants and cafés for various tastes, a large all-year ice rink, and a cinema with nine movie theatres (including the first IMAX movie theatre in Latvia), a spacious and elegant Maxima XXX supermarket, modern gym, as well as outdoor children’s playground. Visitors to the O’Learys entertainment zone can enjoy ten pin bowling, pool, sports game simulators and other exciting leisure and entertainment options for the whole family.
