2022-11-08

This Sunday, 13 November, the "Latvia Open" karate championship for youth, one of the largest karate events in Latvia, organised by the Latvian Karate Federation will take place in the event area of the shopping and entertainment centre "AKROPOLE Rīga", 257 Maskavas Street. Teams from several regional cities of Latvia, as well as from Estonia, Lithuania, Germany and Great Britain will be represented at the karate championship, bringing together approximately 250 talented athletes.

"Latvia Open" will be held in two disciplines – KATA, or fight with an imaginary opponent, which is a demonstration of technique, speed and strength, and KUMITE, or sparring fight. Participants in both disciplines are divided by gender into four age groups (U14, U16, U18, +18 years) and in kumite the categories are also divided by weight. In total, the best karate athletes will be determined in 43 categories.

In this year's championship, Latvia will be represented by participants from Ogre (karate and hand-to-hand combat children's club "Karate Sen-e"), Jelgava ("Vitus"), Rēzekne ("Sakura"), Pļaviņas ("Kadzan"), Daugavpils ("Sochin"), Ropaži ("Hagakure") and Valmiera, Cēsis, Saulkrasti ("Vidzeme Karate Club").

During the event, the visitors of "AKROPOLE Rīga" will have the opportunity to participate in various entertaining activities – on the 1st floor by the cafe "Lage Gastronomija" around 12:20 pm interested parties will have the opportunity to play the role of a karate fighter, trying on traditional karate clothes kimonos, as well as testing karate punches on a mannequin.

"We are honoured to host an impressive number of young and talented karate fighters! A sports event of this scale will be held for the first time in one of the shopping centres in Latvia, and we are proud that the premises of "AKROPOLE Riga" have been chosen as the home of this impressive event. We invite everyone to attend this exciting event, which will take place almost the entire day. We wish the participants brilliant results and an unforgettable experience," wishes Valdis Portnajs, Manager of the Shopping and entertainment centre "AKROPOLE Rīga".

"This is the first time when the Latvian Karate Federation organises such a high-level competition outside the usual sports centres. We are pleasantly excited about the opportunity to attract the attention of the visitors of the shopping centre and their support during the competition. We believe that karate as a sport will be able to inspire a number of people, because karate by its nature is an ancient and very intelligent martial art. By organising this event, we want to show that even the little ones can practice karate, because this sport profoundly develops both the mind and physical fitness," says Andrejs Ozerovs, Chairman of the Board of the Latvian Karate Federation.

The championship will take place on the 1st floor event area of “AKROPOLE Rīga” between entrances A and F.
